Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the RA, participated in the event dedicated to the role of youth in biodiversity conservation within the framework of the 7th session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), where he presented Armenia’s vision for engaging young people in biodiversity conservation and the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
In his remarks, the Minister emphasized that youth engagement is a key prerequisite for the effective implementation of environmental policies at the national level, noting that young people bring innovative ideas, strengthen accountability, and promote the application of science-based approaches.
He stressed that youth should be regarded as full partners and driving forces of change, with meaningful participation ensured at all stages of decision-making.
Responding to questions from participants, Minister Matevosyan shared Armenia’s experience in involving youth in environmental processes, highlighting eco-educational programs and cooperation with educational institutions.
He also noted that, as Armenia prepares to host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), ensuring inclusive and participatory processes and expanding youth engagement at the national, regional, and global levels is a key priority.
At the same time, the Minister called on governments to deepen cooperation with civil society and youth organizations, establish institutional mechanisms for youth participation across research, policy development, monitoring, and accountability processes, and bridge generational and gender gaps through effective communication and inclusive policies.
