Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan Met With Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety

Within the framework of the COP30 in Brazil, Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan met with Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
The discussion focused on the implementation of ongoing bilateral projects and opportunities to further expand cooperation.
A number of key environmental initiatives are being carried out in Armenia with the support of the German Government. In particular, the “Biodiversity and Sustainable Local Development in Armenia” six-year programme is being implemented with a €26 million grant from the German Development Bank (KfW). The programme aims to improve the management of specially protected areas, promote ecotourism, restore forest landscapes, and support the socio-economic development of adjacent communities.
The “Support Programme for Protected Areas – Armenia” Project (SPPA-A), aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of protected area management in Syunik Province, continues to be implemented.
The meeting also addressed the “EU4Sevan+” project, which focuses on improving water resources and wastewater management in the Lake Sevan basin, introducing nature-based solutions, and strengthening community capacities.
Special attention was given to the preparatory work for COP17, which Armenia will host in 2026.
The Minister noted that this important event requires effective coordination among state institutions, as well as close cooperation with international partners. He emphasized that Armenia values Germany’s support in this process, as German expertise can greatly contribute to shaping the agenda, enhancing the effectiveness of international negotiations, and strengthening synergies between environmental conventions.
