Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan Met With Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD)

Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the RA, is in the Federative Republic of Brazil to participate in the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Within the framework of the visit, Minister Matevosyan met with Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD).
The Minister welcomed the launch of the new process for submitting financing applications for developing countries (BIM CFR), emphasizing that it represents an important milestone for the Fund’s operations and strengthens its role within the international climate finance system.
The parties noted that the Fund is an important tool—especially for countries most vulnerable to climate impacts—supporting efforts to address both economic and non-economic losses and damages.
During the meeting, Minister Matevosyan presented Armenia's climate risks and the losses and damages recorded in recent years, stressing that Armenia is committed to advancing climate policy and is ready to move forward rapidly, provided that the necessary financial support is ensured.
Referring to future cooperation with the FRLD, the Minister noted that Armenia has already developed two project concepts and expects to submit its first funding application to the Fund in the near future.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed organizational matters related to hosting the COP17 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Minister Matevosyan presented the vision and agenda of the conference to be held in Yerevan in 2026, highlighting its role as a platform that brings together the directions of management of biodiversity, climate, soil, plastics, chemicals, and waste, contributing to more coordinated and effective international cooperation.
The Minister once again invited the partners to participate in COP17, emphasizing the conference’s importance in advancing ecosystem-based solutions, biodiversity conservation, and advancing the global environmental agenda.
