Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the RA, received H.E. Eric De Muynck, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Armenia.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the ongoing preparatory work for the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). The Minister presented current programs and the schedule of activities, emphasizing the development of infrastructure for the organization of the Blue and Green Zones, the measures aimed at ensuring a high-level reception of delegations from participating countries, as well as the innovative approaches being introduced to ensure the effective organization of the event.
COP17 represents a unique opportunity for Armenia to further highlight the country’s role in global environmental initiatives and to showcase its efforts and priorities in biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and the development of a green economy.
The Minister also highlighted Armenia’s active engagement in major international environmental forums, presenting the preparatory process for participation in COP30, to be held in Brazil. He emphasized the importance of such events in facilitating knowledge exchange, expanding partnership networks, and strengthening effective international cooperation.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed programs implemented in the fields of afforestation and reforestation, explored opportunities for joint initiatives, and paid special attention to the issue of safe management of medical waste, taking into account Armenia’s evolving state policy in this area and the prospects for applying international best practices.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their mutual willingness to continue close cooperation and to expand the scope of new environmental programs and support initiatives.
